The Wright State volleyball team won the first two sets and had match point at 24-22 in the third, but Georgia State rallied from there as the Panthers won their invitational title Saturday night with a five-set decision over the Raiders, winning 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-10.

WSU maintained a slim lead through much of the first set before winning it on a Heidi Splinter kill and a Panther attack error and took the second set by erasing a 16-15 deficit with five straight points, three coming on kills by Splinter, Jessica Woods and Alaina McAuley.

The Raiders then looked to be in position to sweep the match as they overcame a 20-18 Georgia State lead with a 6-2 run, half of those as a result of kills from Shaunda Sandifer. An attack error and a ball handling error, however, allowed the Panthers to tie it and GSU kept the match alive with an Ashley Jones kill and another hitting error on set point.

Georgia State led throughout in taking the fourth set, but WSU took a 10-8 lead in the final set on a Splinter kill.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, that would be their final point of the night as the Panthers scored the final seven points to claim the match, four coming on kills by tournament MVP Vineece Verdun.

WSU outhit GSU .293-.232 overall, but the Panthers had the advantage the final three sets .245-.182 and had 11 service aces to just two for Wright State.

Two Raiders posted double-doubles as Woods tallied her third in as many matches with 17 kills and 13 digs while Splinter recorded her first in college with 15 kills and 18 digs. Sandifer hit. 484 on 17 kills and added eight digs while Molly Dolson notched 50 assists and had 10 digs.

Verdun paced Georgia State (3-0) with 19 kills while Jones had 16.

Sandifer was named to the All-Tournment Team as she collected 36 kills in hitting .382 in the three matches and added 17 digs and 11 blocks, five of those solo.

Wright State (1-2) heads to Indianapolis next weekend for the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The Raiders take on Austin Peay (9:00) and Western Michigan (4:30) on Saturday, September 4, followed by DePaul (10:00) and the host Jaguars (5:30) on Sunday, September 5.
